The main character is a resident of the provincial English town of Crewe. His name is Derek and he works in an office, but he earns so little that he cannot pay his bills and provide for his wife, Kim. Still, the man was looking for new problems. In 1985, he made a firm decision to start training for the American football team, which was being recruited by players across the country. The nearest team was in Manchester, so Derek did not have enough money to travel regularly to practice. He didn’t even have enough money to buy special uniforms and shields. Nevertheless, Derek did not despair and decided to create a Railroad Crewe team in his hometown.
He needed funds to begin with, as he had to rent uniforms at second-hand stores. Derek had used the services of illegal creditor Sharkley several times before, which is why he managed to persuade her to give him £200. He was very confident that American football would become popular during the season and selling tickets for the match would pay off the money spent. Derek became a coach, although he did not know much but things changed when a guy named James moved in town from America.
